The GPD WIN 5 Handheld PC, coming with the new powerful Ryzen Max+ 395, is currently out of stock. There is a long line to buy it.

In the world of gaming, there are different categories of gamers; everyone has different preferences and different needs. First, there are PC gamers, followed by those who buy gaming consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox, and recently launched gaming consoles like Steam Machine. Now, there are even powerful mini gaming PCs available, such as ASUS’s new ROG NUC (2025), Thunderobot’s MIX G2, and Bosgame’s M5. Lastly, there are handheld PC gamers. Each has its own pros and cons. Currently, there are many options available in handheld gaming PCs, such as Lenovo Legion Go 2, Steam Deck, ROG Xbox Ally X, etc., and one of the best options used to be the GPD Win 5, which came with the AMD Ryzen AI MAX 385 APU and was very popular. But now, there is another option available with AMD’s latest and trending powerful APU, the AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395, which comes with 16 cores, 32 threads, and a new powerful iGPU. Let’s take a look.

GPD WIN 5—The Most Powerful Handheld PC First Look

Display:

For gaming, graphics power is as important as the display because if your visual experience is poor, your gaming experience will also be poor. The GPD WIN 5 comes with a 7-inch H-IPS (touch) display with excellent color reproduction; it also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, 1920 × 1080 resolution (315 PPI), a clear and crisp 120 Hz refresh rate, and a 6 ms response time, allowing all motions to be experienced smoothly. The special feature of this display is that the colors appear rich and truly realistic, with 100% sRGB accuracy.

CPU:

Earlier, the GPD WIN 5 handheld gaming PC was launched with the AMD Ryzen AI MAX 385 APU, which gave you 8 cores and 16 threads along with 40 MB of Level 3 cache, and this chip had a boost turbo clock of 5.0 GHz. But now you have another option, which is AMD’s most powerful and efficient Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 superchip. This is the most powerful APU in the Strix Halo series. This chip has become so popular that many mini gaming PCs have been launched with it. This chip truly provides desktop-level performance, offering 16 cores and 32 threads along with 80 MB of Level 3 cache memory. It has a max boost clock of 5.1 GHz, a base clock of 3.0 GHz, and a default TDP of just 55 W.

GPU:

Any game requires a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to run, but discrete graphics cards cannot fit into mini PCs and gaming consoles, so their APU is used. In the past, APUs couldn’t perform very well, but times have changed. In the earlier GPD WIN 5, you get a Ryzen AI MAX 385 APU, which comes with an AMD Radeon 8050S integrated GPU, also with 32 graphics compute units and a clock speed of 2800 MHz.

The new GPD WIN 5 handheld PC comes with AMD’s most powerful Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 APU to date. It offers powerful graphics performance because it features AMD Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, which provides a total of 40 graphics compute units. The maximum clock speed of this GPU is 2900 MHz. This Radeon 8060S GPU is more powerful than Nvidia’s RTX 4060 and performs slightly less than the RTX 4070.

Memory/Storage:

The GPD WIN 5 with AMD Ryzen AI MAX 385 comes with 32GB LPDDR5X RAM clocked at 8000 MT/s. As for storage options, you get 1TB/2TB/4TB NVMe PCIe 4.0 2280 options. The special thing is that this handheld PC has a full-size PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe slot, which allows you to upgrade to a 4TB Gen 4 NVMe SSD.

But now, the GPD WIN 5 with AMD Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 offers a total of four different memory and storage options, which are as follows: a variant with 32GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 2TB Gen 4 NVMe SSD, a variant with 32GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 4TB Gen 4 NVMe SSD, a variant with 64GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 4TB Gen 4 NVMe SSD, and lastly, the most powerful memory combination, which is 128GB LPDDR5X RAM with a 4TB Gen 4 NVMe SSD.

And in this GPD WIN 5, you get the world’s first hot-swappable mini SSD card slot, which allows you to add your game library in seconds. It offers blazing fast speeds of up to 1600 MB/s, and you also get a UHS-I microSD slot.

Cooling:

The most important aspect of any computer is cooling. Any computing chip performs better when its temperature is under control. The GPD WIN 5 comes with a powerful Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 APU, which draws up to 120W of power at peak. This chip delivers desktop-grade performance, and to cool it, the Frostwind Cooling Architecture is used. It features a total of four superconducting copper-based composite heat pipes that efficiently draw thermal energy away from the APU at maximum speed, and it has two second-generation PC-grade turbo fans. These fans generate high static pressure while operating with very low noise.

Controller & Buttons:

GPD did not cut corners on controls. The WIN 5 has capacitive analog sticks that aim to eliminate drift and provide precision. Its triggers, LT and RT, use Hall-effect sensors and support two modes: a long-travel analog mode for sensitive input and a short-travel digital mode for quick action, with sub-millimeter accuracy. You also get a traditional D-pad, ABXY buttons, programmable rear paddles, dual haptics, and a 6-axis gyroscope for motion control. There is even a fingerprint-powered power button for fast Windows login.

Battery:

The GPD WIN 5 is the first handheld gaming PC that does not come with an internal battery. Instead, this handheld PC comes with an 80 Wh external removable battery. You can connect this battery to the WIN 5 using a battery extension cable, meaning you can keep this battery in your pocket or backpack. There are two advantages of providing an external battery pack: first, it reduces the weight of this handheld PC, and second, it allows for larger heatsinks and bigger fans for better cooling. The company has named this technology GPD FlexPower. If you want to run this WIN 5 handheld PC at full power, you can use the 180W AI PC-specific adapter that comes with it by plugging it in.

Opinion:

First of all, it is important to know that the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 Superchip in the GPD WIN 5 is really very powerful. This chip delivers performance close to Intel Core i9 14900 (219W) and Intel Ultra Core 7 265 (182W), and that too at just 120W TDP, which is commendable. The iGPU Radeon 8060S that comes with it is more powerful than Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Mobile. If you opt for the variant with 128 GB of memory, about 96 GB of it is shared with the iGPU as video memory.

And one of its best features is the external battery pack, which is a really great feature. With the external pack, you can easily carry multiple batteries, and in the future, you can also replace it easily. In light gaming, you get 6 hours of playback time; in moderate gaming, you get 3-4 hours of playback time; and in intense gaming, you get 2 hours of playback time.

This handheld gaming PC is really very powerful, and you won’t find any shortcomings in it, except for its price. You get very strong hardware, but you have to spend a lot for it. Its starting variant costs around $1910, and the top variant is even more expensive—you’ll have to spend $3110, which is a premium price that not everyone can afford. If you want a mini gaming PC with the same hardware, you can buy the Bosgame M5 AI Mini PC, which will cost you $1699* USD.

For now, you can order Win 5 from gpdstore, but it is not physically available yet; it might take some time in production.

  • The status “In Stock” does not mean the item is physically available.
  • It only indicates that the first batch is still open for reservations.
